The hand behind the stone

Cut by Ken Harrington “The Gem Surgeon”

This is not simply a stone that passed through his workshop. Ken selected the cut and produced the finished stone himself.

Ken Harrington is revered as one of the last true masters of traditional British hand-gemcutting. Trained through an intensive, old-school London apprenticeship from the age of 14, his particular expertise lies in “improving stones”: orienting rough crystal by hand and eye to minimise visible inclusions, close fissures and maximise a gem’s natural colour saturation.

Having an untreated 2.69-carat Sandawana emerald shaped by his hands elevates it from a rare gemstone to a highly pedigreed work of wearable art.
